D-U-N-S Number

Foundations

A D-U-N-S Number (Data Universal Numbering System) is a free nine-digit identifier that Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) assigns to your business. It serves as the root record for your business credit file — the equivalent of a personal Social Security Number in the credit-reporting world. Without one, your business effectively does not exist to the commercial credit bureaus.

How it works. You request a D-U-N-S Number for free through the D&B website. The process takes up to 30 days, though expedited options exist for a fee. Once assigned, D&B creates a business credit file — initially empty — that will eventually collect trade references, payment history, and public filings. As you open vendor accounts that report to D&B (Net-30 accounts, for example), payment data flows into this file and produces your PAYDEX score and other business credit ratings.

The D-U-N-S Number itself is not credit; it is the container. Without it, no business credit bureau can build a file on your company — no matter how many bills you pay on time.

Example. A newly formed LLC registers for a free D-U-N-S Number. Over the next three months it opens three Net-30 vendor accounts — office supplies, shipping, and a wholesale supplier. Each vendor reports timely payments to D&B. The empty file gains history, the PAYDEX score materializes, and the business can now demonstrate creditworthiness to lenders who pull a D&B report.

A D-U-N-S Number is the essential first step in the business-credit ladder. Learn the full sequencing in how to build US business credit from zero.
